Prepare for your Symphony Audition

 

STRING AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

THREE-OCTAVE SCALE OF CHOICE

  • Intonation

  • Tone

  • Bow usage (Be generous!)

ONE MINUTE EXCERPT FROM A PERFORMANCE PIECE OF CHOICE

  • Show off technical abilities such as shifting, vibrato, double stops, etc.

SIGHT-READ A MUSIC EXCERPT THAT WILL BE PROVIDED IN THE AUDITION

  • TIPS BEFORE THE AUDITION

    • Review key signatures and time signatures.

    • Practice getting nervous by playing in front of your teacher, family members, friends, or total strangers.

  • TIPS AT THE AUDITION

    • Before you play the excerpt in the audition, scan the music for key signature, tempo markings, rhythms, bowing, articulations, accidentals, etc.

    • Look for changes to the key signature or time signature in the middle of a selection.

    • Accuracy is more important than speed.

    • COUNT! Keep a steady beat.


PERCUSSION AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

TIMPANISTS

  • EXCERPT OR PIECE OF YOUR CHOICE

    • Demonstrate note reading, rhythms, and tuning.

OTHER PERCUSSIONISTS (drums, mallets, etc.)

  • READ AND PERFORM RHYTHMS

    • Versatility is very important.\


WINDS AND BRASS AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

TWO-OCTAVE SCALE OF CHOICE

  • Show off technique abilities, including playing legato, producing a beautiful tone, tonguing, and articulating notes.

  • Play the scale ascending one way and descending a different way.

ONE MINUTE EXCERPT FROM A PERFORMANCE PIECE OF CHOICE

  • Show off technical abilities such as range and agility.

SIGHT-READ A MUSIC EXCERPT THAT WILL BE PROVIDED IN THE AUDITION

  • TIPS BEFORE THE AUDITION

    • Review key signatures and time signatures.

DAY OF THE AUDITION

  • Arrive 20 minutes early.

  • Sunday dress will ensure a more professional audition.
